Beagles

The beagles in the ARC were bred for this life of suffering. They are kept in tall pens with metal floors for their feces and urine to fall through. When we were able to take a tour (the ARC won't allow tours anymore).

The Animal Resource Center is incredibly evasive and secretive when it comes to what they use the beagles for. Often times, in the abstracts from the Crisp Database, all we know is "abstract not available.". What are they hiding? From what we do know, NIH funded a study involving plutonium radiation of beagles.

Bone Degradation - These beagles are the unwilling subjects of an experiment by Dr. Ray Lloyd. The study, entitled "Population Risk Model for Alpha Induced Bone Neoplasms", is studying the effects of radionuclides such as plutonium, americium and radium on bone health. We already know that these elements are very dangerous, and there are currently many regulations concerning exposure to them. Dr. Lloyd, however, feels that it is necessary to know exactly how exposure relates to bone health degradation.

Cardiac Death - Another experiment is being conducted by Robert L. Lux to study cardiac death. “The overall objective of Subproject 4.1, Ventricular Repolarization of Subproject Pacing Induced Canine Model Heart Failure, is to study the distribution rate related changed of repolarization in canine hearts compromised by rapid pacing induced heart failure.”
