We, the undersigned, acknowledge that some students object on the basis of religious or ethical grounds to dissection, vivisection, and the use of live animal models in classrooms. We fully support the implementation of a campus-wide Choice-Dissection Policy at the University of Utah that would require all classes in which lab work involving the mandatory use of living or dead nonhuman animals, be required to provide an animal-free alternative for all students who are opposed to using nonhuman animals without penalty to the student. As a part of the policy, we also ask that:

• Students be informed at the time of registration if a class uses live or recently deceased animal models in the curriculum
• Students be informed orally and on the written syllabus of their option to choose a non-animal alternative
• The alternative project will require a student's investment of time and energy comparable to that required by the original specimen dissection

We fully support a student's rights to a humane alternative and the creation of a Choice-Dissection Policy on the University of Utah campus, and we ask that these signatures be given full consideration.
